A delegation led by David Cullen, head of the division of the European Commission's Directorate General for Neighborhood Policy and expansion negotiations, visited the Port of Baku
A delegation led by David Cullen, head of the division of the European Commission's Directorate General for Neighborhood Policy and expansion negotiations, visited the New Port of Baku in Alat settlement today. Welcoming the guests, General Director of” Baku International Sea Trade Port " CJSC Taleh Ziyadov said that due to its modern infrastructure, cargo handling capacity and location, the Port of Baku plays the role of an important transport point between Europe and Asia and plays an active role in the development and promotion of the Trans - Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor-Middle Corridor). He noted that the Port closely cooperates with the European Union, and since 2016, 5 TAIEX and 3 long-term technical assistance projects have been implemented. In this context, experience is being exchanged with European partners on digitalization, port operations, management, human resources, establishment of a Regional Training Center at the Port, Protection of Labor and the environment, and public relations. At the meeting, which was attended by representatives of the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and development, as well as a number of European financial institutions, the general director noted that the Port of Baku was awarded the “EcoPorts” certificate of the European seaports Organization for the first time in 2019 and again this year. He noted that the Port of Baku was the first to receive the status of "Green Port" in the Caspian Sea, and it is one of the 30 ports that have received such a status in Europe. The general director said that the Port of Baku also cooperates with European companies in the field of education and exchange of experience. It was noted that a memorandum of Understanding was signed between “APEC Port Training Center” of Antwerp Port of Belgium, Fontis University of Applied Sciences of the Netherlands, Gilde Institute and leading logistics company of the region “Cabooter Group”. According to this memorandum, representatives of companies operating in the Port of Baku and logistics of Azerbaijan, or persons wishing to work in the field of transport, trade and logistics in general, are involved in short and long-term training programs in the mentioned countries.
David Cullen, head of the division of the European Commission's Directorate General for Neighborhood Policy and expansion negotiations, and Peter Mikhalko, head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, stressed that the economic and investment plan of the Port of Baku, which has acquired the status of a “green port”, is of great importance as the flagship project number one. Then, the guests were presented with a book about the history of the Port of Baku.
After that, the delegation got acquainted with the working principle of the terminals of the Port of Baku on the spot and their questions about the work process were answered. At the end, a memorial photo was taken.
